FIGURE 20. Captain William Lee Apthorp. Born in Georgia in 1837, reared in Iowa, a Dartmouth College graduate in 1859, Apthorp became captain of Company B, 2nd South Carolina Loyal Volunteers, under Colonel James Montgomery, and was eventually promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 34th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry.
